Welcome to Orbit - We hope you enjoy the journey

During our research, we discovered The Overview Effect, a term coined in 1987 to describe the profound shift astronauts experience when they see Earth from space.
Many, including those on Apollo 24’s journey to lunar orbit, have returned with a transformed perspective on humanity, the planet, and the universe itself.
We aimed to recreate and explore this sense of awe: blending environment, exploration, and the spirit of the Space Race into our experience.

We set out to capture the wonder that sparks The Overview Effect, focusing on the beauty of space, human achievement, our connection to Earth, and our place in the universe.
We mapped out key themes, built a visual timeline, and drew inspiration from NASA imagery and footage. The music was then crafted to amplify the introspective yet powerful experience.
Together, it all merges into the fluid visuals and pulse-driven sound of Orbit.

Orbit

We aim not just to showcase the universe’s beauty but to shift perspective back to how we treat our own world.
Astronauts who experience The Overview Effect aren't just moved by space - they often struggle to return home after reflecting on how poorly humanity cares for its own planet. We wanted to consider climate change whilst also offering a positive connection to our ecosystem for the future.

Working with young dancers from IYA, a depth camera was used to capture movements and turn them into particle systems resembling galaxies. This idea of micro / macro and a singular point making contribution to a greater whole, is a reoccuring theme throughout the work.
